DIY Attic Insulation GuideDIY Attic Insulation Guide

Adding Atlanta, GA to the attic is one of the most cost-effective and simple home improvement projects you can do. It traps heat in the winter and cool air in the summer, prolongs roof shingle life, lowers energy bills and improves indoor comfort.

However, it’s important to note that even the best attic insulation won’t stop air leaks unless you properly seal any penetrations in your attic and around recessed lighting. In addition, there are many factors that should be considered when deciding whether or not to tackle this project yourself or bring in a professional.

Prevent Ice Dams from Forming with Better Insulation

Before you begin insulating your attic, be sure to clear the space of any boxes or other storage items and that there is no mold or mildew present. Also, make sure that the vents along the attic eaves and soffits (the area under the roof overhang) are not blocked by existing insulation or obstructions. If they are, install baffles to prevent insulation from blocking them.

Next, decide what type of insulation you want to add. Fiberglass batts are easy for DIYers to install, but be sure to purchase “unfaced” fiberglass so it doesn’t contain any paper or foil that could lead to moisture and mold. Loose-fill cellulose is another option, but requires a blowing machine that is usually available for rent at home improvement stores.

Lastly, you should consider hiring a professional to install spray foam insulation. This type of insulation is difficult for most homeowners to install themselves and requires specialized equipment that is not available at most hardware stores.
